The convergence of finance and sustainability has emerged as a critical focal point for professionals across industries. As organizations increasingly recognize the profound impact of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors on long-term value creation, the demand for sustainable financial practices has surged. In this interview, we delve into the experiences of Vanessa Cheung (Part-time MBA Intake 2023), a Sustainable Finance Specialist, who shares her journey through the HKUST Part-Time MBA program.

A Journey into Sustainability

Vanessa's career in sustainable finance began with a unique foundation. With a background in translation and interpretation, she initially ventured into the corporate world as an intern in the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) department of an accounting firm. This experience ignited her passion for sustainability and set her on a path toward her current role at an investment bank, where she advises on structuring sustainable debt financing instruments in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.

"My journey into sustainability began as a translator, but it quickly evolved into a commitment to promoting sustainability and supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy," Vanessa explains. Her transition from translation to sustainability exemplifies the diverse pathways that professionals can take to enter the field of sustainable finance.

Choosing HKUST's Part-Time MBA Program

When considering her options for further education, Vanessa evaluated several programs, including a Master of Finance. However, she ultimately chose the HKUST Part-Time MBA program for its flexibility and comprehensive curriculum. "As a Sustainable Finance Specialist, I recognized the need for a systematic education to enhance my skills in financial structuring," she states. The MBA program's structure allows her to continue working while studying, facilitating a dynamic exchange of ideas with classmates from various industries.

"The ability to engage with my peers and learn from their day-to-day experiences has broadened my perspective," she adds. This collaborative environment is a hallmark of the HKUST MBA experience, fostering an enriching learning atmosphere that extends beyond traditional classroom settings.

Curriculum with a Focus on Sustainability

One of the distinguishing features of the HKUST MBA program is its integration of sustainability principles throughout the curriculum. Vanessa highlights courses such as the Introduction to Sustainable Finance, which equips students with knowledge of innovative financing methods that align sustainability performance with financial incentives. "Sustainability is discussed across various courses, ensuring that graduates are well-equipped to lead in sustainable business practices," she notes.

This comprehensive approach to sustainability prepares students to address the complex challenges that businesses face in today's global economy. The curriculum not only emphasizes theoretical knowledge but also practical applications, enabling students to develop the skills necessary for effective leadership in sustainable finance.

Influencing Career Trajectory

Vanessa's participation in the Part-Time MBA program has significantly impacted her career trajectory. Initially seeking to broaden her knowledge, she found that the diverse perspectives of her classmates encouraged her to explore a wider range of career possibilities. "I realized that I don't have to limit myself to being just a Sustainability Specialist; instead, I can pursue a more diversified career development path," she explains.

This newfound perspective underscores the transformative power of the HKUST MBA program. By facilitating connections among professionals from different sectors, the program empowers students to envision and pursue multifaceted career opportunities in sustainable business.

Enrichment Initiatives: Collaborating with Industry Leaders

In addition to the robust curriculum, Vanessa has actively engaged in enrichment initiatives, such as organizing talks in collaboration with the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC). These sessions aim to raise awareness about the significant investment required for Asia's sustainable future—an estimated US$66 trillion over the next three decades.

"The SFC is playing a crucial role in ensuring market transparency and combating greenwashing," Vanessa explains. Such initiatives not only enhance students' understanding of the industry but also create valuable networking opportunities with key stakeholders in the field of sustainable finance.

Advice for Prospective Students

For individuals passionate about sustainability and considering the HKUST MBA program, Vanessa offers valuable advice. "Focus on finance to solidify your knowledge and skills. Understanding the financial aspects of sustainability is crucial, as the transition to a low-carbon economy requires substantial investment and commitment from corporations," she emphasizes.
